We have a beautiful block wall fence that runs across our backyard and along one side of the house. Until a few years ago the fence was a rather rickety wooden one. Even so it was one of the fun places for the cats to play and sharpen their claws. Then one year the Santa Ana winds kicked up really hard and blew it over and we replaced it. Now all the cats in our tract run up and down this fence and so we have named it the Cat Freeway!
The cats travel to different trees in hopes of catching a bird. There is an orange tree that hangs over the side fence that always seems to be full of them and Twiggy can often be found staking them out. The cats also use the fence to travel to different roofs and different backyards. They share the fence with the lizards. It is very rare that I look out there and can’t spot one — either a cat or a lizard — sitting in the sun. The fence is also a wonderful place to sit and taunt one of the neighbors’ dogs.
It is from watching all of these cats “play on the freeway” that we have come to name them all. All of the cats have names that we feel fit them — all of the lizards are named Stubby!
Have you heard the stories of how the hobo’s leave markings along the railroad tracks telling other whether a house is friendly or not; whether they might feed you; etc? Well, we’re pretty sure that cats do the same thing and that they have left signs for all their friends telling them
Cat friendly people live here. And they have a doggy door! And there is almost always fresh food and water just inside!
