Breakfast with the Kitties

Shebee makes herself at home

A few weeks ago we put a pretty red new collar on Shebee in hopes of giving the birds in the neighborhood a better chance. A couple of days later her new red heart tag with her name and our phone numbers arrived and we put it on her. She seemed extra proud to belong. We continued the routine of putting her out in the evening and locking T&T in the house. I’d get up in the morning, open the doggy door and feed Sheb outside and T&T inside. Twursula would eat most of her plate and go outside and wait for Sheb to go inside. Sheb comes inside and finishes Twursula’s plate while Twursula is outside licking Sheb’s plate. Twiggy just eats her own and then goes and waits at the front door for someone to let her out. She only uses the doggy door as a last resort.

I was feeling pretty good about this whole situation. The girls were learning to get along better during the daytime and I thought everything was AOK. Then one night I heard Shebee at the doggy door crying and scratching to get back in and I felt like the worst Cat Mom ever. All of a sudden it just didn’t feel right to have put a collar and tag on her and to then treat her differently than the other cats. This was a Wednesday night and so Thursday morning I told Hubby that Shebee was moving in. He was all in favor of it and didn’t really know we had waited this long. Reason Number One: Like Twiggy Shebee hogs the bed! But who cares? We waited to do it until Friday night, I didn’t think one extra day would hurt and since we both had to get up early to go to work I thought Friday night of a 3 day weekend was a better idea. Just in case we ran into any rivalry issues.

Things seem to go better each day. Shebee still wants to get us up a little earlier than we would like but that’s getting better, too. A couple of times Shebee and Twursula have both slept on Amara’s bed and Twiggy has slept with us. Last night Twiggy slept with us, Shebee slept on Amara’s bed and Twursula slept on the couch.

Breakfast with these 3 cats is something to be experienced. I have the 3 of them standing at my feet crying to be fed. They certainly aren’t starving, they have dry food out all the time but that’s not what they want. They want their little plate of kibble with tuna juice poured over it. Their breakfast of choice Monday through Friday. On the weekends the 3 of them split a can of wet food. I’ve learned that I have to unlock the sliding glass door, remove the doggy door and then fix their plates. Shebee has no manners and since she is very insecure about her next meal she wants her’s first. This just outrages Twursula. Twiggy has always understood that Twursula gets her plate first! So! I must take Shebee outside and put her plate down very quickly and then feed Twursula and Twiggy while trying to pretend they didn’t just see me go outdoors!

Oh, and about that collar, it doesn’t seem to be helping the birds out much! She got 3 birds this week. I was home to help 2 of them make their escape. I had been able to get her to drop them and to gently carry them out to the front yard while she searched the bedroom/front room for the next 10 minutes. One of them I had set on the lawn and when I saw it still sitting there 15 minutes later I didn’t have a good feeling. And then it flew off across the street. It was as if that little sparrow wanted me to know that I had saved him.

I’m so glad Sheb is a full fledged member of the family now! She certainly seems to be appreciative. Maybe all those birds are her gifts to you.

The breakfast routine is hilarious. No one but cat lovers could appreciate how well they can train us. I have come to the conclusion that we do not own them – they own us and we are here to serve their every need! Our payment is a warm furry body curled up on our laps, or a big old head butt to let us know they love us, or just a quick ‘hug’ as they rub against our leg as they walk by. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Rodney King’s immortal words, “Can’t we all just get along,” coming to life. Glad it continues to improve.
